The GRID Company Limited (GRIDCO) Division of the Public Services Workers’ Union of TUC (Ghana) has embarked on a nationwide reorganization of all its nine (9) local area Unions in preparation towards their Divisional Conference this year. The Tamale area which comprises GRIDCO workers of Wa, Sawla, Buipe, Yendi and Tamale were reorganized on 21st March, 2022 at the GRIDCO Conference Hall in Tamale.
In a meeting preceding the Tamale local elections, the Regional Industrial Relations Officer (RIRO) of PSWU in the Northern Region, Sister Felicia Kraja took members of the Union through education on who Shop Stewards are, their roles at the workplace, and the dos and don’ts of Shop Stewards. Elections were then conducted under the supervision of the RIRO and the Regional Chairperson of the Public Services Workers’ Union, Sister Janet Ameseya.
In the Tamale area elections, most of the positions went unopposed except the position of the Vice Chairperson that was contested by two people. Brother Abanga Lambert of Tamale office emerged the winner with seventeen (17) votes against Brother Inusah Sulemana of Buipe office who had eight (8) votes. Eventually, Brother Inusah Sulemana was elected Assistant Secretary to the Local Union.
The election of GRIDCO Local Union in Tamale area was an all-male affair and as a result of that the position for the Vice Chairperson usually reserved for a woman was vacant. At the end of the elections, the elected Chairman Brother Joseph Iddrisu Condatere and the other seven (7) Executive Officers including the Youth Representative were sworn into office by the Regional Industrial Relations Officer.
On her part, the Regional Chairperson Sister Janet Ameseya admonished all members of the GRIDCO Local Union to stay united and be open to themselves as well as discuss their problems dispassionately. She also reminded them to bring in more members because that is the way they will remain strong. “We have strength in our numbers”.
