The PSWU of TUC (Ghana) on Thursday, December 7, 2023 ended its 11th Delegates Conference. The Delegates’ Conference which is the highest decision making body of the PSWU was marked under the theme “Strengthening Public Sector Institutions: A Catalyst for Economic Development: the Role of the Union”.
Present were about 500 Delegates and Observers from the Ten (10) Administrative regions of the PSWU, TUC (Ghana) Secretary General, TUC (Ghana) Affiliates, International Partners from the Public Services International (PSI), Building and Woodworkers International (BWI), International Trade Union Confederation Groups, The Chairperson and General Secretary of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), Past National Officers of PSWU, Chief Executives and Heads of Institutions of PSWU Member Organizations and other Dignitaries. The Special Guest of Honour was Comrade Florence Mucha Taruvinga, President of Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU).
In his Opening remarks, the Chairperson of PSWU Brother Ken Tweneboah Koduah welcomed all to the Conference and recounted how the development and implementation of the PSWU 4 year Strategic Plan (2020-2023) which encompasses the hopes and aspirations of members has brought so much benefits to members.
The General Secretary of PSWU Brother Bernard Adjei in his address mentioned that the PSWU of TUC (Ghana) has remained one of the very best in keeping to a fair democratic principles over the past decades. He added that the biggest role the Union can play in strengthening Public Sector Institutions is to use the Union’s collective power and strength in advocating for good working conditions, policies which promote accelerated economic development and defend workers rights. Brother Bernard Adjei called on all to develop a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability for the betterment of their institutions.
On his part, the Secretary General of TUC (Ghana) Dr. Yaw Baah reiterated that no country has developed without a strong public service. He added that the modest gains achieved in the Public Sector may be lost if it is not strengthened. He used the opportunity to commend the PSWU for being one of the best in the TUC family.
The Special Guest of Honour Comrade Florence Mucha Taruvinga in her address said most governments have taken civil and public servants for granted. She called on workers to unite and ensure no further division from employers and government on workers.
There were other fraternal messages and greetings.
The Conference saw the election of Brother Ken Tweneboah Koduah as the National Chairperson, Brother Ernest Kwami Billy as National Vice Chairperson, Sister Priscilla Otuo-Serebuor as National Vice Chairperson (Woman) and Brother Bernard Adjei as the General Secretary. The other positions were Brother John Nii Dornu Sampah as Deputy General Secretary, Sister Rebecca Agalga as 1st Trustee and Brother Michael Allotey as 2nd Trustee. All these National Officers will serve for the next four (4) years.
The PSWU unionizes over 71 Public Sector Organizations and exists to organize, promote and defend the economic and social interests of its members.
